Just keep in mind that there is no record of a parrots killing anyone. A bite may bring blood and hurt, but it will quit bleeding and quit hurting. It just isn't that big of a deal.

Don't miss out on everything wonderful with your bird just because of a few foolish fears.

i'm 100% with you on this, i know it won't be that bad, at worst a little red stuff and maybe a bit sore, that's why I'm mad at myself.

im not exactly a pretty princess, i work in a industry that hurts, broken bones/finger. snapped legs from sports many a times, stitches in my head/arms/legs, ops and plates and this little bird is getting the better of me and i just don't know why i can't get the better of my nerves. :banghead:

i feel i need someone to come round and slap me in the face a few times and tell me to sort my life out and stop being a baby.:lol:

Completely agree that no amount of reading or watching videos prepares you for the real thing! Kobe (Pionus) was my first larger parrot, and if I hadn't have travelled such a huge distance to get him (from London to Yorkshire and back again) I would have seriously thought about returning him! I felt completely out of my depth for the first few months. Hoping you take it easy at work - sounds like a dangerous business you are in.... but not as dangerous as living with a parrot! :roflmao:

Hi All.

Been reading many a post and finally decided to join in and say Hi.

I'm extremely new to this and i am looking/researching getting my first Parrott.
I've wanted one for years but life/kids/time didn't allow me to devote the time and devotion needed, now I'm older, kids older and feel i have the time and funds.

i have so many questions but I'll leave those for the correct place.
Welcome to the group! I just recently joined myself. This is an incredible source for information and guidance. I have had an Alexandrine for a short time and currently have a young Indian Ringneck. So I am just learning as well.

Taking your advice, and manning up

ive been hand feeding him veg in his cage, tonight he kept trying to get to my hand and missing the veg I kept moving away.

So tonight I thought, let’s see what’s going to happen, offered my hand and basically closed my eyes and prayed to the birdy gods.
He put his beak over my hand and just moved around very, very gently nibbling, my heart was racing, I honestly can’t believe how scared I am of that beak, (I know I won’t die , ,but it’s hard to anyway I got a little nervous and tried to move away, I touched him under the beak/chin and he freaked a little, I tried to touch his head and same, so I decided no more.

he reached over with his foot and gently held my finger/hand I left it for a second or two and tried to put his foot back on a perch (remembering someone said, always finish on a good note) but he decided to grip

he gripped quite firmly, not hurting but enough I couldn’t pull away, I then realised I had no choice and regardless of what happens next I can’t move or pull away as I’d hurt him or pull him off his perch, so just gritted my teeth and waited for the “chomp”

he nibbled my finger and I tried to get him to release but the more I moved the more he gripped, so I had to wait it out.

he nibbled and held for a minute or two then let go, my other half was laughing at me as all I was saying was “Bert be good” “bert be nice” .

You see, you have to be the bigger man. He's just a bird with huge fears of a huge keeper with big teeth and claws.

I'm so glad you made that progress.

Excellent progress!

I have to tell you that the first time Monaco did a funny reach for my hand that wasn't overtly aggressive or angry I did the same thing. I relaxed, and she pulled my hand close and grabbed my hand with her foot to step up. You're half way to him telling you that he wants to go somewhere and considers you an acceptable mode of transportation! Or, whatever he's trying to tell you... You're mid-conversation! I think it's exciting to see what he intends to say!

we thought great he’s getting more comfortable but then, he got super brave

And if that wasn’t enough for one day, the T perch he been terrified of since day one, we’ve managed to get him to touch it over the last few weeks but he normally puts a toe on it and he gets a treat, but tonight

Little lad is just going from strength to strength, hated being sprayed or bathed 6 weeks ago and would try to attack the spray bottle, poor boys had a busy few days.

now
This far in just 2 months? You're doing great, both of you!

i was told to try it and at first it did nothing, but coupled with music playing to start and then the vacuum (had to be moving, not just on) and after maybe 10 minutes he started to open his body and then he loved it.

It did take a 1 litre bottle of spray before he started to open up.

It's ridiculous how much she makes a liar of me! I was moving furniture and had it on to use the hose on the baseboards yesterday. I caught her wrestling with her water dish again! Good timing maybe, with the barometer...it rained yesterday.
