Trot trot the baby goes
Trot Trot to town
The baby is trotting all over my house and I'm also running along for baby proofing. She's flapping her wings. I think soon she'll learn to fly. She's trying all sorts of adult foods, so I've introduced pellets two days back. She is perching on a low perch and showing few antics also.
Now, my queries are:
1. When and how will I start harness training?
2. How can I ask her to step up?
3. When to start recall and target training?

It's so satisfying to see the little naked ball of a chick growing into a feathery Goofball.
@Clueless, do you know, alexandrine parrots also have a nice smell. I just experienced it.

1. When and how will I start harness training?
Now :)
Have the harness in her view, bring it closer over time to her so she gets used to seeing it and being near it. It is a slow process. When you have it very close, you can let her beak at it and play with it so she won't be fearful of it, before ever trying to put it on. When you put it on for the first time, just do one step and then take it off, for eg, over the head, then off. Again, a slow process.

2. How can I ask her to step up?
3. When to start recall and target training?
You can start now, but rememebr she is a baby. So she might take a while to get it. Keep training to a minimum so it's not over bearing. I would incorporate a recall to my birds when they came for food. They would come if I said nothing, so I knew they would come, so when I set them down on the table, before they move I call them and they always came, and I fed them right away. So the only difference from before "training" was literally the recall cue I said as I put the youngsters down on the table for feeds.

1. When and how will I start harness training?
You can start harness training now! Ideally, you want to teach your baby to put his/her head through a loop (can be a leash to a harness, or the actual harness itself) and reward for that behavior. You also want to work on teaching the baby to be comfortable with you lifting up the wings and laying material on top of the wings or underneath them.

2. How can I ask her to step up?
For a baby, ideally you want to put your hand flat on a surface and just work on teaching the baby to come towards your hands for a reward. One little toe on your hand? Reward it! Two toes? Reward that! Reward any movement to being on your hand. Once the baby is actually ON your hand, you then then work on moving your hand.

3. When to start recall and target training?
Also now!

Keep in mind that you have a baby! Short and sweet training sessions are the way to go! Say, 3-5 minutes at a time, however many you want throughout the day. You can use food, treats or even toys as a reward.

Be sure to also socialize your baby with various items. The vacuum, sirens, broom, mop, windows, mirrors, etc. If the baby is old enough to not require heating, also work on going on car trips to pet friendly places.

Fly, fly, fly my baby    ...today morning the baby has taken her first flight. I picked her up for morning feed, suddenly she flapped her wings and flew and landed quite gracefully on the floor. I'm sure she'll be a great flyer.

Baby is refusing formula nowadays. It's become a tough job. He's more inclined towards foraging and self feeding. But that food is not sufficient as his crop remains half empty and he cries for food. What should I do? He also doesn't know how to take water.

In case you wonder, why I'm calling the baby He instead of She, I've another question. Baby ringnecks do not develop rings before minimum 18 months. The coloring is similar to females except for the eyes. But can you see the rudimentary ring below his mandible? Opinions please, friends.

Keep offering the formula. Be sure there is plenty of adult foods for him to eat throughout the day. As for water, I like to put the baby in front, dip my finger in to get a drop and touch the side of the beak so the small droplet of water trickles in. You could also splish splash the water a bit to pique interest.

Monica might know about sex, but personally I always default to "he" for babies until I can confidently say they're female. You could use the pronoun "them" if you don't want to comit one side or the other :)

I'll go insane with this brat. Half an hour back, during the night time feed, the baby tried to perch on the food bowl spilling half of the food and flew straight to the kitchen. Now we can never afford to be careless about safety. CONSTANT VIGILANCE.
