Hi,
Vet visit is booked in 12 hrs so have to cope overnight.

This morning have come to greet my B&G Macaw and she was acting weird, stopped talking no sounds and just sat on perch not moving, mouth slightly open, very lethargic.

She was breathing really weird, only thing I can explain it like is breathing fast like some one having anxiety attack, it's kind of laboured if that makes sense.

No discharge, no sneezing or coughing or clicking.

Offered food and water and didn't take any, had a couple sunflower seeds and maybe 1 walnut piece but that's it, tried to offer more nuts but refused which is odd.

She's just sitting there with eyes closed, sometimes pretending to regurge, hasn't actually vomited.

At times her left wing is drooping and also she trembles every now and then.

Poo is white/offwhite with a little green, a little runny.

She's 3yrs old and never had any health issues.

She's now in my ensuite bathroom on a perch with the heat light on all day and will keep her there overnight.

Any suggestions on what is happening? Could it be an injury or some sickness affecting crop? I have no clue at all. She had a fall off her perch last night really late but didn't check her as she seemed OK, and she doesn't seem to move or anything when I touch her but she won't come to me or anything I have to pick her up, if I lay her on her back she'll stay there.

She usually is lively and noisy, she doesn't let others in my house hold her and today any1 can hold her she doesn't refuse.

Mixed up sugar water today too and syringe dripped it into her mouth she did take some.

Can't sleep and need some advice hopefully some one knows this or has experienced.

Attached photo of her doing the heaving/regurge but nothing comes out

Also attached photo of her wing drooping

And how she looks perched

She just stays there eyes closed and cheeks puffed.

Will attach a photo of her from a couple days ago too.

Sounds like it may be a respiratory infection. Keep her warm & if possible add humidity/steam in the bathroom.

Any ideas how this can happen? Cold temperatures? It did get really cold the past week, 10 celcius but not cold and wet

If it were me I would be at that vet the moment they opened... appointment or not.

Keep her warm and quiet. Limit her space if she is falling or getting hurt. Any new appliances, cleaning supplies, cooking utensils?

I agree be at the vet waiting she definitely needs to be seen asap. I wonder if she hurt herself in some other way when she fell from the perch.

Could an injury exhibit the symptoms mentioned above?

I do wonder if the drooping wing and not wanting to move around could be because she's sore from the fall or if she's possibly cracked a bone in her wing or has a soft tissue injury and she's not moving from the pain.

My thoughts too

Are those symptoms associated with injury? The breathing and the sleeping, no noise and just staying in 1 spot?

The breathing isn't constantly like that, its only after I've moved her etc

The sleeping and staying in one spot along with no noise I'd say yes since in the wild in that situation they'd be as still as possible to avoid being detected by predators and being an easy target to be picked off if they are unable to fly away and sleeping is a way to conserve energy and to heal.

The increase in breathing especially if it's only after moving her is quite possibly from pain. Just like in humans if your hurt or don't feel well and overexhert yourself odds are you'd be breathing heavier or have a hitch in your breathing because of the flare up of pain.

Thanks

She's off food and water as well so I'm quite worried do they do this while injured? I did give sugar water yesterday and she ate some seeds and walnuts yesterday but she's literally staying still on perch and sleeping, breathing only really happens if I move her or touch her etc

The fake regurge thing I'm not sure what's going on there though, hasn't vomited or anything

Will be at the vet in 20mins but still like second and third opinions

Ill or injuried birds often won't want to eat unfortunately. Which can make things worse since they have such a high metabolism and need to eat frequently to keep their energy up and to promote healing and gaining strength.

The sugar water probably perked her up and reved up her appetite some so that's good that she was willing to eat after that.

Hopefully the vet will be able to figure out the issue get her on the road to feeling better. Please keep us updated and I hope it's good news.

Thank you everyone

I fed her some pureed pumpkin, carrot, pea,and crushed her pellets into fine powder and mixed in water and tried that too, had a bit but not much.

Took water from syringe as well

Have seeds and walnuts available too just incase

Hoping it's all good news and on the road to recovery

She passed at the vet, i came down not long before she passed and she died in my arms, not long after i arrived, he thinks she was waiting for me as she was distressed with my partner and him, but when i came she died within minutes, suspected injury from falling off perch but we are deciding whether to do an autopsy or not as I'd like to respect her I'm not sure if I can do it

Family is very upset she was like a child to me she loved me as much as I loved her, this is the first time I've lost a pet like this i can't help but blame myself and am feeling very guilty, I've never had to deal with these things before I have been sick all day
