Hi all,
Very long story short (it’s in my other posts if you want to see), but my budgie Blue was given a broad spectrum antibiotic called sulfatrim for a possible infection he might have. There was no official diagnosis, they just told me to give him this while waiting for AGY tests to come back (it came back negative, yay)
The sulfatrim is an oral suspension and the dosage is two units (in a syringe) every 12 hours for seven days. I gave it to him for a week, although he was quite fussy with some sessions and I’m not 100% sure if the whole dosage went into him for a few. But I believe he got AT LEAST most doses properly.
The thing is, after the seven days were completed, he started feeling better for 1-2 days and then went right back to being sick again. I observed him for another week to see how he is, and now he is in some ways better and some ways worse than before. Today has officially been a week since I ended that 7-day regimen. I was wondering if it would be okay to give him a couple more doses, as there is still a decent amount left in the bottle. The vet office is closed for the weekend so I can’t call them now, and I am scared seeing him not act like himself after all this time. Tired of waiting and seeing him like this.
I couldn’t find much about sulfatrim on budgies. I found one page that gives sulfatrim as a tablet for other birds, which said to give for 7 days but not more than 10. Dosing is different. In my case, as an oral suspension, I gave it for seven days and gave nothing for another seven days. I was thinking about giving it for another two or three days, maybe?
What are your experiences with this? Should I do it?
