Hello everyone. I just got an 8 y.o. Red fronted macaw. I had her for 5 days already. Warming up to us slowly. She is finally getting out of her cage and stepping up to us and loves our kids. My concern is that she has only been eating peanuts and sunflower seeds from the food that was sent with her from her previous owner. She like veg and fruits per the old owner and we have offered it but she just tastes it and spits it out. Is this part of the adjustment period? Is she eating enough? Thanks in advance for any info.

It's likely part of the adjustment. My Jardine's would only eat a couple of seeds when I first brought him home, and it took a bit to get him to eat anything else.

What do her poops look like?

Her poops look normal. I looked it up online. Not watery at all.

Well water wouldn't be my worry, more about amount of feces. I could tell my Bourke's hadn't eaten the first day as he had only urates and urine. Once he started eating his feces increased. So if it's only a small bit of feces you know he's not eating a lot. If they look fine, he's probably fine :)

What pellets and veggies/fruits have you tried?
Sometimes it's just finding the right things. My Scarlet LOVES a peas/corn/carrot frozen mix that the breeder fed him.... NONE of my others macaws will touch it. Lol

He said hey I've gotta be the odd man out, lol. That's how Bosco was with me,Shawna has had luck getting him to eat other things but with me that was all the veggies he'd eat but I was still happy with that since it was definitely preferable to nothing.

You can also try different sizes of fresh things @Mizzely had a lot of luck getting Ripley to eat big chunk of fresh .

Birds are weird. Nothing the veteran AA members don't know already.

Favorites of all my macaws...
Corn.. any kind. Frozen/canned/fresh
Warm cooked sweet potato
Peas
Banana
Grapes

Not saying these are the best items but it is a start for you.

My macaws absolutely LOVE sugar snap peas. However, one won't eat them unless I split them open for him first. Yes, I know...with that being said,
it might be the way you've prepared his veggies/chop that isn't the way his previous owner prepared it. Are you still in contact with them to see what he liked to eat and how they'd prepared it?

My macaws also love eating everything that Sarah's mentioned. With the sweet potato I cut up dark green leafies and incorporate those into the sweet potato. If those are offered as-is, they'd both turn their beaks away.

According to the previous owner she liked cooked or steamed veg (carrot, broc) grapes, apples which I have tried to give him. He prefers us to hand fed him the nuts and tastes the veg and fruits but does not eat it. It might just be her adjusting but I’m worried she is not getting enough food. She drinks if I give the bowl of water in front of her face. She knows where they are at inside the cage.

I will need to ask her how she prepared the food. Thanks.

I have tried the exact same food the previous owner had her on and the veg/fruits she likes.
