What a wonderful care you are giving him ! Sounds like you have sought excellent veterinarian care!

It takes as long as it takes to heal bones . Unfortunately bones can shift a little, even with the best support and wraps , and that just makes the healing take a little longer , but it will mend! Tiny little birdies air bones can't be pinned , or plated .

Sending best wishes for speedy healing tho!

Welcome to the forum Alex and Jasper.

It sounds like Jasper is in good caring hands and is getting the treatment he needs.

I documented most of Marvin's misadventure in the thread @April shared, but am happy to help in any way I can while you guys navigate Jasper's treatment and recovery.

In the meantime, here's a blurry photo of Marvin from a few days ago balanced on her previously broken foot...

Thank you so so much! I just read the whole thread and process, I'm amazed at how much of a trooper Marvin was throughout the whole thing! Im so happy she was able to go back to her normal, adorable self, and I'm only hoping the same for my Jasper. Thank you for providing so much detail about the process, it really helps when you're desperately searching for some composure through other peoples experiences with their birds with broken bones lol.

Thank you! The vet had mentioned that if Jaspers leg were to heal properly, he may not have the same amount of strength in it as he did before, which I am very much prepared for. My only concern is if he'll still be able to grab and perch.

My only concern is if he'll still be able to grab and perch.
I think the rough priority is...
  • blood supply (so tissue doesn't die... by far the most important)
  • nerve function (so feeling is preserved to maintain proprioception and avoid injury)
  • joint function (for range of movement)
  • tendon integrity (to allow muscles to move bones).
  • muscle strength (to contract sufficiently).
My experience with Marvin is that if the first two are fine (and they were), then time allows improvements in the remaining functions.

She's still lacking full mobility in the ankle joint and toes, but that continues to improve.

They're also very adaptable, and that goes a long way.
