Hi all,
Main question:
I have a budgie named Blue who has had quite a story of being sick (written below). He went to the vet once, who is an avian specialist. He got medicine, but it didn’t work. Since he is not better yet, I want to go back and have the vet look at him again. Based on my own research, I feel like what he needs is a culture & sensitivity test for bacteria/yeast. Of course I will see what the vet says first, but this is just my guess beforehand. The thing is, that vet visit (which was my first one ever) was $210 in total. It was a lot of money for me to spend on something that did not solve the issue. Blue is priceless to me but I want him to feel better as soon as possible in the right hands.
Since this is my first vet experience, I was wondering if anyone could tell me what was the cost of theirs if they had any similar experience to this. I just want to make sure this place is not overcharging me and if there’s hope for a better price elsewhere. When I call places up, I am only told the base visit cost. I want an idea of what the whole thing might be around.
That place’s costs were:
$96 base visit fee ($62 for a re-check within couple of weeks if needed)
$82 PCR Test for AGY (came back negative by the way)
$30 Sulfatrim oral suspension
And now I think I might need a culture & sensitivity test. Anyone have stories of how much was the total for them and how much I could expect to see?
Backstory if needed:
My budgie Blue has shown signs of nausea through head-bobbing, fluffiness, and low appetite for six whole months now. Based on what I’ve read online, it looks like a bacterial infection which is causing the nausea. It started in October and only lasted a two days, and he went completely back to normal. His normal self includes flying around crazily, singing beautifully, playing, eating a lot, and such.
Then he got those sick signs again in November for a couple of days. Then December for 1.5 weeks. January for a few days. February for 3.5 weeks up to now in March.
It‘s a constant cycle every month of getting sick and going completely back to normal. Whenever I start seeing those signs, I isolate him in another cage and put it right next to my room heater to keep him warm. It seems to help each time I do that, but I want to permanently solve this problem so it doesn’t come back. It has been a long time now and it makes me so upset seeing him like this.
He has only thrown up on three separate days, one in February and two in March. He never threw up before that.
I finally went to the vet in February (I wanted to go earlier but long story short, I just couldn’t do it). I told them the whole story in-depth, and they did a PCR test for AGY which came back negative, which is great. They also gave him a general antibiotic for 7 days, which was sulfatrim. After finishing it, he started singing again - but only for one day. Now he is back to being sick again with two days of some throwing up (not consecutively). He can still fly around, but is puffy and sleepy. He just looks so tired. This is where we are now.
